I kinda feel like Avatar is like someone that geekdom's been trying to set me up with on a date. It's not that intelligent or original but it's got a reputation for being fun and really, really pretty.

. . . Okay, personally? The graphics are very well done but every scene was inspired by either Dinotopia or a mid-90s rave. Not that neither of these things can't be visually interesting, it's just that the art direction was about as generic and derivative as everything else in this movie.

When my mother was growing up her grandfather owned a movie theatre and going to the movies became a big family ritual and it's something she's passed down on to us.

Which is to say that I HAVE SEEN SHERLOCK HOLMES AND IT IS AWESOME.

It's a marvelous movie in its own right, even if you're not familiar with the series, and perfectly faithful to the series if you are.

Also, I am really looking forward to seeing what the revitalised fandom is going to put out.
